2018 will probably go down as the year that the general public learned firsthand about “Analytics,”(if they weren’t already well-versed with the term, the news this year brought it into their lexicon with a few infamous cases).
Like many things, the data itself isn’t a bad thing (the way in which we choose to utilize it is where many of the objections come into play).
After 13 years absence, the show returned to the Kenosha Campus.
While the larger Kenosha atrium space may have altered perceptions slightly, this years show (2018) had slightly more attendees.
The amount of work was fairly consistent as well, although the category distribution changed (as it does from year-to-year). We had 290 submissions, with display of over 300 pieces.
The largest category continued to be DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (albeit by a lesser margin this year) with approximately 22% of the work being in that category.
Just slightly over 21% of the work was in the LAYOUT category. This has, in many shows over the years, been a mainstay most associated with Graphic Design and Communications.
Just a bit under 20% was DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION.
TRADITIONAL MEDIA comprised just a bit over 8% of the work. In our first joint show (btw Kenosha in 1999) it was one of the more popular categories.
IDENTITY and BRANDING made up about 7.7% of the submissions this go-around, although the definition of branding and identity may have played into those category submissions.
PACKAGING made up around 6.7% of the submissions. The “packaging corridor” between Waukesha/Milwaukee county and Northern Illinois is second only to the Paper Valley and Twin cities border regions.
PHOTO MANIPULATION was 6.3%.
MULTIMEDIA ( a combined category or video, games, and presentations) was 2.8%.
3D modeling (using software to create 3D images, movies, models) was 2.1%.
WEB DESIGN was close to 1.5%.
Three of four prizes in the LIFE IS BIG video contest for Gateway were won by Graphic Comm students!
Congratulations to Tina Buckley, Chris Palomares, and Tonia Copabianco, who all won some of the top prizes! Incidentally, you can see some of their videos in this year’s (2018) Student Design Show Multimedia Category.

2018 SDS JUDGES
many thanks to this years judges!
2018 SDS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Thanks to all who have helped make this year’s show.
This year’s identity features a stylized watercolor “Red Hawk” (Gateway’s mascot) soaring upward in flight. An apt visual metaphor for Gateway Students.
For this year’s award, designer Kristen Cajka looked towards something different—adding more color and a unique quality to the awards.
With the assistance of the Fab Lab’s John Zehren, and instructor Peter Pham, Kristen’s awards were fabricated from scratch with materials purchased at local businesses, and manufactured at Gateway’s S.C. Johnson iMET center FAB LAB.
This Spring, the district-wide STUDENT DESIGN SHOW will return to the Kenosha Campus! (The last design show held on the Kenosha campus was in 2005). The RECEPTION and AWARDS will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, from 5:00 – 8:00pm in the Kenosha Campus Atrium.
This year’s identity was designed by Ms. Kristen Cajka. Kristen’s design was selected from a panel of Administrators and Administrative support personnel (at the end of January) from a pool of submissions from students in the Advanced course on both the Racine and Elkhorn Campuses.
It incorporates Kristen’s traditional watercolor interpretation of the Gateway Technical College mascot soaring upwards; the RED HAWK.
Congratulations Kristen!

The STUDENT DESIGN SHOW Identity selected to represent this year’s show on the ELKHORN CAMPUS was designed by student Octavio Valadez. Octavio’s design was selected by a focus panel from several student submissions in the Advanced Class from across the district.
Thanks to everybody who participated in this year’s show, and all of the folks who helped setup. Here’s some “behind-the-scenes” shots shared by Ms. Sue LaCanne.
