Tuesday, April 8, 2014 marks the official opening of the Student Design Show to the public! Alternating annually between the Walworth and Racine County Campuses, the district-wide show featuring entries from GTC Graphic Communications students will be in a new venue this year.

This year’s event will be on display in bay area of the Commons at the S.C. Johnson iMET Center in Sturtevant Wisconsin. Located between Kenosha and Racine, the iMET center is a state-of-the-art manufacturing and training facility, and the home to the FAB LAB (open to the general public).

The show will run from April 8th until April 16th, with a RECEPTION and AWARDS ceremony (with food and refreshments) on the evening of Tuesday, April 15th.

EVERYONE is INVITED!

GTC “KEYCOCK” at the NAACC

Gateway Technical College Graphic Comm student Greg Kirstein collaborated with fellow graphic student Steven Samuelson and welding student  Joe Felgenhauer to produce the work “KEYCOCK,” which was exhibited at the National American Association of Community Colleges’ national Workforce Development Institute held in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jan. 29-Feb. 1.

Photos of the piece were also displayed at The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The artist’s concept was to use keys received from across the Gateway District (Racine, Kenosha, and Elkhorn) to symbolize the keys to a proud and bright future. A video helping to document the process appears on YouTube (see below) as well as a newspaper article in the Kenosha News.

Senior Banners

Several people have admired the “senior banners” that we display during each design show. Some have inquired who we have contracted for the banners, and for the last few years it has been SASS GRAPHIX in Salem, Wisconsin.

SASS also happens to be run by former GTC graphic communications student Paula Sass.

2014 Student Design Show Promotional Materials

This year’s Student Design Show promotional materials  were voted upon and selected by faculty and staff from close to fifteen submissions. Elkhorn Campus Student Nancy DuPont created the promotional look for the show. Nancy’s designs will be utilized on: postcards, posters, and other promotional materials for the 2014 show run.

Congratulations Nancy!

A BIT ABOUT the SDS…

Thanks so much for visiting our site and supporting our Students in the Graphic Communications Program District-wide.

The very first Student Design Show to exhibit the work of students from all three campus locations was held in Kenosha in the Madigano Theater Commons in 1999.

Its hard to believe that we are on our 16th year of the district-wide combined show, and our 18th year overall!  The show originally rotated among each of the three main campuses (Kenosha, Racine, and Elkhorn) annually.

We now rotate at locations between the two campus regions offering the Graphic Communications Program, and are excited to be holding the show at a brand new venue this year (the S.C. Johnson iMET center in Sturtevant).

Since 2007 we have maintained a show presence on the web (we have documentation of some of the more recent shows–2010 onward).

Gateway introduces the FAB-LAB

Gateway Graphic Comm students, along with iMET Center Engineering and Fabrication Students  (and all GTC students as well as the public at large) are using (and invited to find out more about using) the FAB LAB. Check out the video below.
